This house involved the demolition of an existing old house not worthy of restoration. Being an established property, it had a variety of beautiful mature trees. The mature oak and camphor trees on the property was taken as a key point of departure for the design concept. The circulation axis was set out in line with a beautiful oak tree, thus visible from the interior and exterior. The edge of the pool courtyard was defined by the large camphor tree. With these parameters set, the open plan ground floor areas were created with a soundproof yet glazed games room separate to the dining and kitchen area.

The guest bedroom wing forms a storey edge to the courtyard independent from the main wing.

 

The client enjoys a selection of rural French inspired forms, colours and textures with simple building forms and large openings from the social areas to the garden and pool courtyard. This link to the garden with covered external seating and circulation creates an intended ambiguity between interior and external space.
